Educating Inspiring and Beautifying the world for 22 years.

O’Rourke synthesizes the urban with the natural, ephemeral, ethereal and transcendental through her paintings. Appreciating moments of harmony in our chaotic world, O’Rourke sees how heavenly serendipity weaves karmically throughout life. The feminine experience weaves through O’Rourke’s work. Inspired by ideas of beauty, motherhood, aging, emotional strength and vulnerable fragility, she confronts these notions in both an expressionistic and impressionistic fusion of styles. Strong textural swipes of wax and the use of dried paint, dried petals and dripping latex creates textural impasto; and thus initially seemingly ‘pretty’ paintings are edgy and powerful.

Scratching, drawing and dripping over the painted surface fuses an urban element into her painting, evidence of O’Rourke’s childhood growing up in city of London. Music also plays an influential role - rhythmic brush strokes create visual vibrancy. Evidence of a sartorial background comes through the color palette; both O'Rourke's parents and grandparents worked within the fashion industry, and she studied art and fashion at Central Saint Martins - part of the University of Arts, London, where peers included Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon, and Hussein Challayan.

She often remarks on her works as ‘collections.’ Born Emma Goodman in England in 1970, O’Rourke began drawing and painting before she could talk. By the age of three she had her first works exhibited at the Ben Uri Gallery in London. She spent many years working as an art director in London. Having been a painter full time for the last 10 years, Emma O’Rourke is represented by the Modern Artists Gallery and The Catto Gallery in Great Britain.

O’Rourke moved to DC in 2000. She works from her studio at the Jackson Art Center in DC. She lives with her husband and two children.
